Sarah & Martin’s Wedding at The Angel Hotel, Alton

As an Angel Hotel Alton wedding photographer, I already know this venue well — and Sarah and Martin’s day, in front of 60 of their closest family and friends, was one of the most genuinely emotional weddings I’ve photographed here. I first sat down with Sarah and Martin at a local pub near Alton a few months before the wedding, just to talk through their plans over a drink. That kind of conversation tells you far more about a couple than any questionnaire — and I knew straight away their day was going to be full of real emotion rather than posed perfection.

The ceremony took place inside, in The Angel Hotel’s beamed function room — and it was, without question, one of the most emotional ceremonies I’ve photographed this year. There’s a moment during a wedding when you stop thinking like a photographer and just feel it with everyone else in the room, and this was one of those. Martin’s reaction as Sarah reached the top of the aisle said everything words couldn’t.

What struck me most was how present everyone was. No phones held up blocking the aisle, no forced smiles — just 60 people who clearly adored this couple, watching them make it official.

Once the drinks had settled, we moved through to the quieter parts of the garden for formal portraits — family groups, the wedding party, and some time alone with Sarah and Martin. The mature trees and soft, dappled light around The Angel Hotel make it a genuinely lovely backdrop for portraits at any time of year, not just peak summer.

These are the photographs couples tend to treasure most in the years that follow — not because they’re the most technically perfect, but because everyone in them is genuinely happy to be there.

The evening wound down with dancing beneath a set of light-up letters on the dancefloor — a lovely personal touch that photographed beautifully once the room dimmed. Watching Sarah and Martin share their first dance, surrounded by everyone who mattered most to them, was the perfect close to the day.

It suits both indoor and outdoor ceremonies. Sarah and Martin married inside; Hannah and Dan (whose wedding you can read about here) married outdoors in the grounds. Both worked beautifully — which gives couples real flexibility depending on the season and their own preference.

The grounds do a lot of the work for photography. Between the pergola, the lawns, and the mature trees, there’s enough variety within a short walk of the building to get a full range of portrait styles without needing to travel elsewhere.
